We were asked if we could re-create the Starship Enterprise for a big event? We analysed numerous pictures as to how we could re-create this iconic image in ice. We quickly decided it could not be made from just one ice block - the minimum we would need to use is two and a half. One block each for the left and right-hand sides of the ship and half a block for the 'disk' bridge.
The delicate and intricate nature of this design did not allow us to carve away too much ice. The basic design consists of two long engine pods, the (small) body and the 'disk' (the most recognizable feature). If we carved just these parts - the ice would melt at warp-speed and disintegrate within a short space of time. We had to use some artistic license to 'hold the structure together'.
The photos shown here were taken a few seconds after we had set it up - the frosting had not cleared yet. Unfortunately the lettering on the engine pods and on the disk are not as clear as they would be say half an hour later when the defrosting was well underway. This Luge took about an hour to defrost.
Placed on a table the best way to light it was with four very bright LED lights - all pointing up and into the ice. The lighting gave an ethereal and 'space' quality to the sculpture.
A channel was drilled through the centre of the Starship and exiting at the back.
This was a fun sculpture to design and carve. It took longer than we expected - dues to the detail we had to put into it and the overall design logistics - of how it would all be put together and of course transported. Without the ice around the engine pods to 'hold it all together' - they would have broken of even before we arrived at the venue. Through careful planning and design, the Starship Enterprise landed in one piece.
