A Faberge Egg
Claire wanted something extra special for her mother's birthday. The party was to be held at the beautiful George Hotel in Buckden, Cambridgeshire for family and friends.
Claire wanted something opulent, something different. Something out of the ordinary and of course made out of ice. What better than to re-create a Faberge Egg in Ice.
We have created Faberge Eggs in the past. Claire however was rather particular in what she wanted and the design. She sent us a couple of pictures of designs she very much liked and asked if we could integrate the elements into one Vodka Luge. The elements being decorative 'twirling' swirls and bows. Most importantly the egg had to appear that it could open into two pieces.
The complete Faberge Egg design was created from one ice block - standing 1m tall and 1/2m wide. Our blank canvas; an ice block weighed around 20-stone before we started. The final piece after all the carving weighed in the region of 12-stone. It was certainly tall and impressive. And heavy!

The initial design started off as a rough drawing - highlighting the various elements needed and what Claire had asked for. It is not always possible to combine a lot of elements onto one piece. Simplicity of idea tends to work best and is more dramatic and theatrical. The Luge lent it self in being a 'Twister' as opposed to a straight forward drilled channel Vodka Luge.
The two side supports we designed and carved holding the egg in the centre. The logical thing to do was then drill a channel through the ice from the very top of the Faberge Egg to the very bottom. Vertically down through the ice. This allowed guests to place their shot glass, Martini glass or any glass directly under the exit point of the drilled channel. This design does not allow a guest to use their mouth to catch the drink - be it alcohol or a soft drink. This is a Twister.
Claire was so happy she sent an e-mail directly thanking us and a photo! We LOVE receiving testimonials and photos taken by clients - it makes us feel good and that everything was worth while in that we did a good job.
