Swans form the genus Cygnus of which there are approximately 6 or 7 varieties of Swan such as The Mute Swan, The Trumpeter Swan, The Whooper Swan and so forth. Their wingspan can be up to 10 feet (3m) - and pretty dangerous if one comes up too close.
Pairs usually mate for life - unless the male is killed or the male fails to nest properly and look after their cygnets. Female swans are knowns as Pens and males as Cobs. A group of swans is collectively known as a Bevy of Swans or even 'a wedge in flight'.
