For the past six years Rainna has ordered a Vodka Luge for their Christmas Party from us; year upon year. Each year her and her team's ideas have tended to be a tad bizarre, weird and wonderful (but dead on trend) themes from for example, Kim Kardashian's Bottom, a bust of Kim Kardashian, a Hand holding a Croc shoe and so on and so forth - great, GREAT ideas (we love to carve for them as they are so 'way-out' and brilliant in their ideas and thinking).
Christmas 2019 Vodka Luge seemed however out-of-character. But No, it was actually bang-on trend for the venue, their party ideas as well as, not forgetting the BREXIT debate that had been going on for months and years. A Bust of Queen Victoria. Busts and likenesses of people are difficult at the best of times to carve. However, this bust is pretty famous with lots of angles and different images of the bust. It made it a tad easier - but not a walk-over. The problem with 'famous pieces' is that people know what it should look like - putting greater pressure on the carver to get it right.
Queen Victoria Bust
Starting with a full ice block ( measuring 1m x 1/2m x 1/4m) in a Portrait format was the starting point. Having various images and photographs of the bust around us helped. Like creating all luges, the first thing to do is the rough cut; an important first step. We drew out the image we wanted onto the actual ice. This created a 2D portrait. Next was to plot the various lines and angles we wanted; including the jewels, the tiara, the neck line and the expression were important aspects to the design. This Queen Victoria Bust was a sour-puss look version; the definite, 'We Are Not Amused' look! Everything had to be in perspective; the right proportions with the 'look and feel' of the bust having to just perfect (or as perfect as we could get using the medium of ice). Unlike carving/modeling in for example, clay if we carved away some ice accidently or just too much from the ice block - we cannot put it back! A piece carved is a piece gone forever.
Over several hours (and lots of cups of tea) the finished article emerged. It looked (though we say it ourselves) pretty close to the original (with some artistic license of course!) The spur look was just right and mimicked the photogphas we had.
Delivery was to an old, traditional London Pub "The Queen Vic" - a fantastic location to hold a London Christmas party.
The following day Rainna wrote to us:
"Thank you so much for the amazing ice luge last night. It went down a storm and everyone loved it!"
What else can we say - roll on Christmas 2020's new idea! We can't wait to see what you have come up with Rainna!
